Weather report

Jarett said it was 80 degrees in San Clemente on Christmas Day. In previous letters, he said he was freezing, so we sent him some long underwear. "Yeah" he said, "I'll use it," "It gets in the 60's at night!" He said the breeze off the ocean is "bone chilling" even if it is 60 degrees.

Christmas Day, 2011

Jarett called on Christmas Day! It was the highlight of Christmas! He was at the home of the ward clerk, where he and his companion were invited to dinner. They set him up with a computer so we could SKYPE. He was in a little girl's bedroom, just off from the kitchen where everyone else was, with the door open. We could see pink walls with butterflies behind him. No matter, Jarett had our full attention.

He looked and sounded GREAT! He said he's gained some weight. He has learned to appreciate sushi. He lives by the beach and walks by it daily. On Dec. 26th he was moving to another apt. in the same complex. Their current apt. has a moisture problem.

They've set another baptism date for January 7th. The woman who will be baptised is a friend of the last person they taught and baptised.

Bea, a widow they were visiting who's husband was a member, died suddenly. Her funeral is this Saturday. She was a master gardener. They will go to her funeral.

Elder Hart, his companion, did a cameo appearance to tell us "Elder Jolley's a great guy. You did a good job raising him." Thanks Elder Hart! Elder Hart is from Ogden, UT.

Jarett was surprised when Taylor and Barney Brockbank came over during the call. It was great to have them there to talk to him. Taylor and Jarett are "brothers from different mothers." Barney is like another Dad to Jarett. They added a lot of fun to the call. Taylor is about to put in his mission papers, so they will be away from each other for 3 years.

We're looking forward to another call on Mother's Day!

Elder's Jolley, Hart and Geoff Geertsen

Jarett and his companion met a member at a local fast food taco place. Geoff, the member took a picture with his phone and emailed it to us.

November 1, 2011 - San Clemente

Since August, Jarett's grandparent's were moved to an assisted living care center, his grandpa had a hip replacement, and his grandparent's home has been prepared for sale. These have been major distractions from blogging. Sorry, for not staying current on this blog.

His emails have been short and he's sent less pictures. We're happy he's happy.

Jarett was in Oceanside 6 weeks. He loved it there and was surprised to be transferred. He sent some pictures, included here.

The first day he arrived in San Clemente, there was a bomb scare at the high school. Roads were blocked and people were panicky. The second day, there was a power outage for a huge portion of CA and parts of Arizona. They didn't have power for 12 hours. Burglar alarms went off randomly, and it was strange. The third day, they had a major rainstorm. Quite an introduction to San Clemente!

Both he and his companion, Elder Hart (from Colorado), were new to San Clemente. So, they've had to become acquainted with everything and everybody.

August 16, 2011, Oceanside

August 16, 2011, Oceanside

Sounds like this week has been good! Hey, what’s Zander’s address, so I can write him?

Just send me pictures of my friends and family and any other pictures that look good.
Tell Nick I say “Hi” and thanks for the CDs.

K- You won’t guess what happened this week. Well, I think I all most got kidnapped. Yeah, it was crazy! We went by a referral that we got and talked to a guy there. He wasn’t interested, but, his brother somewhat was. But, he didn’t want to read the Book of Mormon. So, it was pointless. We finally got in our truck and drove away. All of a sudden, we heard honking. It was the guy that didn’t want to read the Book of Mormon. He wanted us to pull over, so we did. He asked us if we listen to rap music. We said “yeah, sure.” Then he said “alright come in the car and listen to this. It’s really good.” So, we parked the car and went over. We first just had our heads in the car listening to it. Then he started saying “Sit in the car. U can hear it better.” So we did, with our feet out of the car and the doors open. The lyrics were actually really good. It was talking about the armor of God and how Satan can’t stop us. We sat there listening and we both noticed that he was jittery (shaking) like when u are really nervous or scared. We asked him why he was shaking. He said it was from carving wood all day. Yeah, sure!? He finally asked us if we could go take a ride with him. We said “no” and got out of the car, and that was it. It was so weird!!! Before, he didn’t want to talk with us, and all of a sudden, he pulls us over and wants us to take a ride with him? Yeah, it was weird!

This week has been pretty good! I found out a new way to teach the Plan of Salvation. It’s so cool! You have everyone close their eyes and you basically ask them questions that make them think about their life, and what they are becoming. It’s way cool!

Yeah! Ocean side is alot cooler than Temecula. It’s actually been pretty cold at night when were contacting.

It’s weird, when I got to ocean side all the letters stopped from my friends. I haven’t gotten any except one from Teri about her graduation. It was good to hear from her!

Thanks for everything u have done I love you guys!!

PS - Tell Tay thanks for writing me back. Gees! He takes for ever!!! and Adam and Joseph, when do they leave for the MTC?

August 2, 2011 - Oceanside

August 2, 2011 - Oceanside

I got transferred last week to Oceanside, California! It’s way nice down here!! The temp doesn’t usually get above 80 degrees!! I like it a lot. Things here on the mission have been going great!! We set 2 baptismal dates this week and are contacting everyone we see!!!

My new companion is Elder Ellsworth. He’s from Colorado. He’s way cool! I guess his last companion had a disability, so they couldn’t work that much! So, we have been working so much this week! We set up 2 baptismal dates and have been finding new people to teach everyday! The mission has been flying by!!!

Hey Dad!!! It’s good to hear from u! That’s good that they’re fixing up your office! How’s work been?? I love u tons Dad. Hope everything is going good!!! !!

I saw the pict that mom sent me about Joseph. He’s so funny!!

Wow! Dang! A bunch of stuff has been happening this week!! That’s crazy! That’s way cool that u went to Joes’ farewell. I know that meant a lot to him.

I heard about Jason from Erin and Teri. I heard about Teri too! Sounds like alot of new things are taking place this week!!

The saying is true days feel like weeks but weeks feel like days! You might like that one too mom. I’ve learned to like it alot!! Well I g2g.

July 26 Temecula

Dang! Trek looks like it was a blast!!!! I was laughing so hard when I saw that picture of Tay falling in the water! Thanks so much for sending me the pictures!

Guess what? I’m being transferred today! I have no idea where I’m going and who my new companion is. I’m nervous because I got an email from President Cook telling me that he's going to have me stretch my wings this transfer. I hope I’m with a good companion.

This week has been really interesting. One of our investigators is named Kim (He’s about 50 or 60 years old and just fried his brain from drugs and drinking). He looks old but acts like a little kid. He works for the Salvation Army waiting for people to drop off clothes at one of their trailers. So, we went by yesterday to see how he’s doing. He’s doing good.

Someone dropped off a way old fire extinguisher and he wanted to try it out. So he grabbed it and walked out on the sidewalk and pushed the lever down. I thought he was just going to let it shoot some out but oh, Buddy, was I wrong. He didn’t know how to turn it off! It was so funny! He couldn’t find out how. So, there’s this huge white cloud of smoke going down the street! He finally found out how to and turned it off. It was so funny watching him figure out how! Ill send my flash card home so u guys can watch it.

We have a baptism this Saturday. We rescheduled it for the 30th. Yeah, I won’t be here. Dang! It’s my first baptism too! It was so cool to see how much our investigator has changed and became willing to do anything to be baptized! She literally is glowing because of the Holy Ghost and how much she has changed in her life!

Oh yeah! Last week we got one of our investigators to stop smoking. We took her smokes away!! Yes!!! It was so cool! That night, when we where teaching her! We didn’t tell her to stop smoking. She told us that she wanted too! So cool!!!!

Dang, Spence that looks like it killed!!! (Blisters from trek) I’m sorry Bro. Put some mole skin on. It helps out a ton!! So, how’s the family been?? Erin got a new puppy!! It’s so cute!! How’s work been Dad? and Mom? Spencer is summer almost done already? Are u ready for school again?? You’ll have to send me pictures of swim team! You are going to tear it up this year at swimming!!

Well, I g2g love you guys!! Elder Jolley

For the Hillcrest 6th Ward:

Hey Hillcrest 6th Ward!

My mission is going great! I love being out here! Utah is truly a bubble. There are so many different religions and cultures out here!
One cool experience had happened around the 3rd week I had been in Temecula. Me and my companion, Elder Sharp got done with everything we had planned. So, we stopped the car and prayed, asking the Lord where we should be. We sat in the car for a couple of minutes. Then we both got a feeling to go stop by a member’s home. We went by and just talked to them and came to find out the wife asked the husband for a blessing but the husband was out of oil. Then we show up at the door. The spirit was so strong there that night!!!! I will never forget those feelings! The Lord does use those who are willing to do his work!!!
My testimony is short and simple. The Book of Mormon is true!! Joseph Smith is a prophet called from God! This church is the only true church on the earth! If u haven’t read the Bok of Mormon read it!!!!! And all u boys, u better go on a mission! I can promise u it will be the best discison u will ever make in your life!!! - Elder Jolley

This week has been interesting. I got something in my eye and it swelled up. (Sty) Oh well. Nothing I can really do about it. It’s going down now. Hopefully it keeps going down. I took picts of it so u guys can see.

Ouch Spence! Sounds like it hurts! (Sprained finger)

Next week on the 26th are transfers. So I might be gone or I might be staying in Temecula. I don’t know yet. Things are exploding in the mission right now! One of our investigators called us and we invited her to be baptized over the phone! It was really cool she accepted!

OK. Why do u and dad write me two different letters telling me the same thing?? I just thought it was funny. I have learned so much out on my mission and I love it! Its definitely the hardest thing I have done in my life but I can see it is the most important thing for me to be doing right now in my life.

I love you guys hope everything is going good - Elder Jolley

PS Tell Amanda thanks for the cookies they were good thanks!!!!
July 12, 2011, Temecula

Hey Family!!!!!

Dang! Sounds like u guys have been doing good!!!!!! I’ll send something next week about the mission (for a brief report on his mission in our ward’s sacrament meeting.) I still need to think of what I want to say. This week in the mission is going good. The days feel like weeks but the weeks feel like days!! It’s crazy how fast things go on the mission!!
We picked up 16 new investigators this week! Two families we are teaching have 6 people in them. One more family has 4. That’s just the families! Then, the rest are single people that we are teaching. The guy we are teaching (Todd, the guy with tattoos) has a baptismal date for the 23rd of July. We still have a bunch of work to do with him but he'll come around. Before, when we were meeting with his mom, he wouldn’t even talk to us, he would just walk by and go to his room. Now he comes out every time we are over and talks with us and gets involved with the lesson. It’s so cool!!! It’s by small and simple things great things come to pass!
I’m sorry to hear about Grandpa and Grandma. It didn’t surprise me one bit that he is still wanting to work out in the garden. He is the hardest worker I have ever met!!!! I don’t know how he does it!!! I admire him alot!!!
It sounds like everything is going good at home. I’m happy to hear about everything. Transfers are the 26th. Hopefully I’m not getting transferred, but we will see.
Yeah Mom, u do write a lot, but it’s totally fine. Don’t worry about it. I’m glad to hear from u and Dad and Spencer. I love u guys tons. Talk to u later!!!

July 5, 2011 - Temecula

July 5th - Temecula

Wow! That’s nuts!! I can’t imagine snow! (On the hiking trails.) It’s been so hot down here!! It’s been around 100 most of the time! I have never sweated so much in my life!! It’s way gross!!! The people are way nice though, they give us water and that’s one good thing about it being hot out side. We can ask if we can come in and get a drink.

The 4th of July we didn’t do anything different, still went out and did the Lords work!! But, at night we got to watch the fire works go off. That was all we got to do for the 4th of July. People down here can’t light their own fire works. They can’t even have fire works, because of the fire safety issues.

This week has been good. Elder Sharp was made district leader last transfer. So, we have been going on a bunch of exchanges with different missionaries. It’s weird to see how they do things and why they don’t do other things! I’m just glad I have Elder Sharp as a companion. We get along. I don’t know if I could get along as well as we do, with other missionaries in our district.

Sorry, I can’t watch the Mormon Message you forwarded. Thanks though!! This week I have felt way good!! It’s weird. It’s like the night before Christmas when I was a little kid. That kind of feeling! I like it though!!

Today we went out to the property of the family that we live with. They are building a house on the Indian reservation. While we were out there, we got to see his car shop and get a ride in the Razor 4- seater. You guys have to get one when I get back! Or I’ll get one! It was so nuts, all of the cars they have!!!

Todd, the investigator we have been working with, is starting to finally change. You can just see it in him. He’s happier and feels good!! Last Sunday he came to church and was fasting, and he didn’t have a cigarette the whole time at church! That’s way good!!! It’s way cool to see how things are changing.

love ya tons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

June 28th, 2011 - Temecula

June 28th - Temecula

Hey Family!!!

This week has been going good!!! One of our investigators (Todd) is going through a really hard time. Last week me and Elder Sharp got down on him about smoking and keeping the commandments. We tried to get him to stop smoking. Didn’t happen. He says he wants to stop but he doesn’t stop smoking. It’s weird!! He smokes about a pack a day. That’s so much money!!! He'll get baptized some time though!!

Thanks so much for the package!! Thanks!!!!! Yeah, I got everything. I don’t need anything. Thanks though!!!

That’s so funny about Erin and Nick!!! (Nickaylee deterrent) That sounds way fun about girl’s camp. I bet Dad had a blast!! Is there much flooding from all the snow??

Dang, Grandpa is a trooper! That’s nuts to hear about him. He is truly one of the hardest working men I have ever met!!!

Sounds like the family is doing pretty good!! Dang that sounds so much fun at Grace’s house!! (making s’mores) It reminds me of camping!! That’s one thing I do miss alot of is camping!!!

Well, this week has gone by pretty fast. I still think I just got here yesterday. It’s so weird!!!

Way to go Spencer!! Making the big bucks! That’s good to hear!!! What r u going to do with all the money?? If it was me I would just save it and use it when u get back from your mission. You’ll need it then!!

love you guys, Elder Jolley!!!

June 21, Temecula

We set a baptismal date for this guy named Todd.  He has tattoos all over him loves to smoke and drink. He's a way cool guy though. We had a lesson yesterday with him and he finally just said "K I'll give it a shot. I'll read and pray every day for one month.  If I don't get an answer, then I'm done."  So we told him OK.  Then, we set a baptismal date for him. He said "K, cool."  It was so sweet!!!  That's just one of the cool things that happened this week!!

6/14/2011, Temecula

Thank you guys so much for everything that you have done!!! This week in the mission has been good.  Elder Sharp is the district leader now. We didn’t get transferred this transfer.  Only one Elder got transferred and another has finished up his mission, so, he’s going home tomorrow.

Some things that have been interesting this week? Um, well we stopped by this house and found out that the dad was a preacher for his job.  Yeah, we didn’t know till we sat down and he wouldn’t let us talk at all.  We were there for about an hour.  We were stuck.  Yeah it wasn’t that much fun at all. He said the Book of Mormon isn’t true at all.  Then we said, ”Have u read it?”  He said, “no” then that was it, basically.  I finally had enough with the guy telling us that we were wrong and everything. So I just interrupted him and bore my testimony about the Book of Mormon.  I said we could be here arguing all night but we aren’t going to go any where because u won’t read the Book of Mormon.  “How will you ever know it’s true?”  So, then we got up and walked out of his house!  That’s just one of the many experiences I have had this week!  How’s dad doing?  Love ya tons.  Here are some picts

6/7/11 Temecula

The mission is going good!! Its been the hardest thing I've ever done, just because I don't feel worthy to be out here some days.  Other days its been a blast!  Its weird.

That's way cool to hear about Joe!  You'll be a great missionary!!!

One cool experience I had this week was when we went over to a members house.  On the way home we stopped by a house out by the Indian reservation. The family is way cool way nice and knows alot about the church.  We talked to them for about an hour and have a return appointment.  When we were biking home the dogs that live on the Indian reservation got out and were chasing us.  They're so stinkin fast!!! I couldnt believe it!! They finally gave up and turned around.

It's so cool out here.  Temecula is a pretty town,  really homey and country like.  Every one is really nice, most of the time!!

One cool thing I found out when I was on exchange, was that Metal Mulisha's compound is in Temecula.  We could see them riding their dirt bikes and flying through the air.  It was pretty dang cool!!!  It made me want to ride mine.  Oh yeah, mine's not working.  Ha Ha, dang it!!!

The weather down here is always sunny.  It's only rained twice so far!!!   Its been pretty dang nice!!! The mission is fun!!!

This last Sunday, we had one of our investigator family's come to church.  Every one in the church wanted to welcome them in.  They loved it!!  The oldest daughter (11 years old) stayed for the whole time and went home with members that live right by them.  It was so sweet to see how the ward welcomed them in and made it a good experience for them!!

Well g2g love you guys!!
Thanks you guys for all the support u guys have given me!!!

Temecula, May 31, 2011

One cool experience happened just last night.  I was on an exchange with another Elder named Elder Kim.  We got back to the church to switch back with our regular comps.  Then me and Elder Sharp went off to dinner at a members house.  It was way good!!!  After that we went tracting and found this 21 year old sitting out front of his house. He has been having problems with his family and didn’t know what to do.  So, we talked to him and taught him a little about the Book of Mormon and how it can help him out with these problems and to pray about it.  It was really cool. You could tell that the kid was struggling in life and needed help.

After that, we had a feeling to stop by a members’ house to find out what members lived around them. They invited us in and to eat with them so we did.  We talked and had a great time there.  Just before we were getting up to go, the wife asked us a question “DO U EVER FEEL LIKE YOU’RE INSPIRED?"  I said “yes.”  Then she asked, “Do you Elders feel like you were inspired to come over tonight?”  Then Elder Sharp told her about our day and why we choose to come over there. Then she said last week, when we met with the family, we taught a lesson about Alma. That next Sunday she was giving a lesson in Relief Society and it ended up being about Alma and what we taught her family. She said it gave her good confidence in teaching the lesson. Next she said she asked her husband for a blessing earlier that day, but the husband was out of oil.  Then we showed up at the house. The spirit was soooooooooo strong!  It is one memory I will always remember for my life.  The lord truly does put you in places you need to be in. It was so sweeettttt!!! That’s just one of many of experiences I have had lately.

May 24, 2011

This week we had zone conference.  On Monday we woke up at 5 a.m. to be there on time.  I wasn't such a big fan of that.  It was way too early!  But, it was really, really good!!!!  We stayed there till 4:30, came home, went to dinner at a member's house, then had lessons till 9:30 that night.  It was sweet!

Today we went to the temple.  It was so cool!  The temple looks like a castle!  It's sooo pretty!  It's about an hour's drive from my mission.  We just got back from the temple and now I'm emailing you.

Elder Sharp and I got a baptism date!  It's for one of our investigators named Blonka.  She's getting baptized on June 30th.  It was pretty cool.  We walked in the first time to meet her and the spirit was way strong, saying "Invite her to be baptized" SO WE DID AND SHE ACCEPTED!!!!.   She had the lessons for about 6 months from the other elders that were here, but they never invited her to be baptized, for some reason. It's weird.

The mission is going good.  Elder Sharp is a way cool guy.  He's always doing what's right and has a way strong testimony.

We received a few emails from Jarett this past Tuesday, which is his P Day. He says he just bought a K2 bike and is in the best shape he has been his entire life!

Jarett also found out that he can only send and receive letters from his friends via the post office. He cannot receive emails from friends (only family). Therefore, he asked that we post his mailing address.

Friends, you can write Jarett at:

Elder Jarett Jolley
California Carlsbad Mission
451 West Bobier Drive
Vista, California, 92083-1906

Below are a few quotes we received from Jarett this past Tuesday. Enjoy!

"The family is changing so much i cant beleive that Jason and Brooke are going to have kids that nuts!!"

"This week has been pretty crazy... the first week we contacted 187 people!! this week however has been pretty slow... not that many people have been outside. I guess they saw us last week walking around haha."

"One cool experience I had... Me and my companion were walking to a dinner appointment when we saw a family outside so we went over and started to talk to them about the gospel and we made a return apointment. The next time we where heading over we got a call from the dad(ROD) asking if we could come later that day and if it was all right if 4 other adults came to listen. We said yes but we both were thinking it was their preacher or pastor they were bringing over. So a "bible bash" it was going to be.
When we showed up at their house we found out that Rod had invited his WHOLE family over to hear what we where saying. It was so sweet! they all liked what we where saying and we invited all of them to church this sunday. So about 12 investigators are coming to church with us this sunday!!!! yea its so sweet!"

Happy Mothers Day!!!

We received a call from Jarett today!    He used Skype, so we could see him, but our microphone didn't work, so we used the phone to talk to him.  We hope to have the kinks worked out by Christmas.  He's in Temecula, California.  His companion is Elder Tyler Sharp - who just happens to be from SLC, and he graduated from Hillcrest one year ahead of Jarett!  They had classes together in high school and they're buds.
We got to wave to Elder Sharp on Skype.  He looks and sounds great!

- Just yesterday I thought I was home in my own bed. But then I woke up to a different room.
